When does an extension need an area-weighted U-value calculation?

The short answer

An area-weighted approach may be relevant where a domestic extension has an opening area or fabric arrangement that is not demonstrated by a straightforward elemental route. The correct route depends on the particular work and the edition of the guidance that applies.

What is compared

The calculation considers heat loss through the relevant areas of walls, floors, roofs, windows, doors and rooflights. The proposed arrangement is compared with the applicable reference arrangement, using project-specific areas and U-values.

What can improve the result

Better-performing opaque elements or openings may offset other design choices, but the improvement must be credible, buildable and properly specified. A calculation should inform the detail, not disguise an unrealistic construction.

Check suitability first
