Part O is concerned with reducing overheating risk in new residential buildings. The appropriate assessment route depends on the project. Early review is valuable because glazing, orientation, shading, purge ventilation, openings and constraints such as security or noise are architectural decisions, not late-stage calculation inputs.

What is included
An agreed assessment of overheating risk, with the assumptions, relevant design constraints and any glazing, shading or opening measures clearly recorded. The purpose is to give the designer usable information while the layout and elevations can still respond.
Information to send
Send plans, elevations, sections, a site plan showing north and a window schedule where available. Identify shading, opening sizes and any restrictions on opening windows, including noise, security, pollution or guarding constraints.
Scope, fees and timing
Approved Document O includes a simplified method and a dynamic thermal modelling route. Suitability must be established for the actual building; the quotation will confirm the method and delivery scope. A SAP assessment alone should not be treated as a separate Part O assessment. Include the application history so the applicable requirements can be checked.
